Selling beads on pavements…strung together with artistry. Her wares seem to grab all the attention and overshadow her own beauty. Only if you care to look closer will you see the beautiful people behind their beautiful creations. A Narikorava woman, one of the many beautiful Indian ethnic groups captured in her unique charm in the evening sun.

This is a portrait of my maternal uncle who kindled my interest in sewing at a very young age. I still remember as a little girl, replicating the corduroy vests and denim sling bags that he used to stitch as a hobby.
Layers of cheesecloth have been used to create different tones in the portrait. Since I enjoy up-cycling materials, I used the “up-cycled style” as a theme. I made his apparel and cap in the portrait with used jeans and a t-shirt

The peacock with his beauty and his dance has enthralled all. A rainbow itself has to take a bow in front of the peacock’s stunning colours!
In this quilt I have tried with my limited human ability to capture the colours and beauty of this nature’s wonder. The perfection in his head and neck, the colours of his feathers and his dance are all shown separately to try and depict his beauty. The head and neck are done using raw edge appliqué and curved edge appliqué methods. The colours and shading of his feather are done using fabric manipulation technique. His dance is shown using two layers of Free Motion Quilting. The inner border on top has two rows of beads sewn on either side. The arched border on top is made with strips of stretch fabric rolled and put together in rainbow shapes with the colour arrangement similar to that of the peacock’s feather.

The playful horse that lost a race.
Why would anyone honour a loser? Why not if the loser refused to run a rat race? A Christmas party surprise at a horse racing circuit awaited people who had never seen a horse race before. Out of the 9 horses that ran the race; with hundreds of guests cheering from the stadium… one happy horse trotted at the end of the line. He did not want to run…he enjoyed the scenery and smelt the roses. Like the equine version of Ferdinand the bull. Horse number six “lost” the race but won my heart. The cheerfulness of that playful horse inspired this piece of work of mine.

If pixie dust and fairy wings
Vivid colours and shiny things
Descended they on to this realm
What would it be…Oh! What would it be?
Graceful moves and spread of cheer
Among fragrant flowers in a sparkly drizzle
What would it be….Oh! What would it be?

A contemporary portrait of my teenage daughter depicting the ‘Gen-Z’ also known as ‘Homelanders’.
The habit of reading books has completely been “ripped off” and taken over by social media and gizmos.
The portrait is made using machine couching method with brown and black cords.
The background composition was inspired by an artwork found on the internet.

Flowers! Though considered feminine, can tone down the masculine when it adorns him. I have always been fascinated by the paintings on Indian trucks. Workhorses; trucks such as these are a common sight around the country. These rugged metal monsters are adorned with delicate flowers painted all over them making these macho machines seem gentler …truly a rhapsody

“Blazing sun and no water in sight
Still a sight so beautiful that gives hope and delight
That life must go on even during the toughest times
In the mundane shapes repeated, my flower stands out and smiles”
The cactus flower, a sign of protection, endurance, and strength, inspired me to see resilience in these tough times. What better image for the cover of a book that opens to the story of the desert.

If you want to know what a pure heart is, you have to meet ‘Pookari Anjale’. Pookari means “Flower Vendor” in Tamil, the language of Tamilnadu in India. Though flower vendors earn a very meagre amount of money by selling their ware, Anjalè took me by surprise with her love. I have seen her a number of times before, selling her flowers on the pavement on the street in my neighborhood. I have passed her a hundred times before. But one evening while my one and a half years old daughter and I were on a walk, my little one’s eyes fell on the flowers that Anjalè was selling. We were soon looking at the many types of flowers that she offered. Marigold, roses, lotus and lilies. My little one eagerly took all the flowers she liked. These were quite a sizable portion of Anjalè’s flowers. Once my daughter was satisfied with her pick, I took my purse out to pay. This is when Anjalè surprised me with her generosity and love. She did not charge me a penny and instead said “It is for the child. She
can take as many flowers from me whenever she wants” Anjalè continues to offer free flowers to my little one who is five years old now. It is her generous heart and a beautiful smile that I have attempted to capture in my art quilt.

Compassion is a trait found in many kids these days. It becomes our responsibility as adults to nurture this compassion to build a more compassionate world.
Here is my two year old daughter at her grandma’s place in Coorg interacting with a cow. I was candidly watching the scene as she sat with the cow talking to her and giving her bananas. The cow was also responding in her own gentle way. It seemed as though the two of them were transported to some magical world of their own. In this collage quilt, I have used my favourite fabrics which I had collected over years, to recreate this magical world with a wonderful garden and many beautiful life forms.
